Story of Aci
Aci, 45 years old, father of two young children. He has not have any stable job for years. His wife left to another village to find a living. He never heard from her since. His mother takes care of the kids while he goes to find occasional jobs during the day. Despair by poverty, he turns to what is most prevalence in Kachin – heroin, wanting to escape from reality. Resulted in an even more cruel consequence: he contracted HIV.
On 2nd March ‘17, Aci was captured by Pat Jasan, a vigilante group manages several rehab centers. Pat Jasan is a coalition of local churches including Baptist, Catholic and Protestant. Founded in 2014 with the goal to eradicate all drugs from Kachin people. One of the young leaders remarked when Aci was brought in with other addicts to the center of Bethel, San Li: “He is a hopeless man. He has no future, only pains and poverty. We are not against him. Our enemy is drug.”
Aci is now chained away in the center for 3 months. He will not see his children. He will not have any freedom.
Aci, 45 years old. Pat Jasan, a vigilante group in Myitkyina, captured him at his house. They tied his thumbs with a plastic band to prevent him from escape.
